fnatic have successfully made it to the semi-finals in Poland after securing a 2-0 victory over 100 Thieves.
The first quarter-final in Katowice saw fnatic take on 100 Thieves in what promised to be a close series taking into account the two teams' LAN map records against one another (5-6). Their recent-most exchange in Odense at the ESL Pro League Season 10 Finals went 2-0 the way of the Swedes, however, the Australians were not about to give up considering their arduous journey to the playoffs via the lower bracket of Group B.
The first map, Inferno, was heavily contested as the Australian defence demonstrated a six-round comeback on the CT side, forcing an overtime. It was here that their defense crumbled, leading to a loss on their own map pick. Mirage followed, where it was on fnatic to mount a CT-sided comeback of their own. The clawback was followed up with a convincing overtime performance, concluding the series in two maps.
The Australians had a productive T-side pistol round to kick off their map pick, Inferno, but an ensuing pistol force buy from fnatic, followed by back-to-back anti-eco triple kills from Maikil "Golden" Selim put the Swedes ahead. After adding another victory to their tally, 100 Thieves were set back by a fired-up Robin "flusha" Rönnquist, who dispatched the entire team, securing a stranglehold on match momentum for his team. The squads went blow for blow in the concluding rounds of the first half, where fnatic walked out with fewer bruises at a convincing 10-5.
Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson and Ludvig "Brollan" Brolin ensured a flawless pistol round record on Inferno, as the Swedish five continued their campaign on the offense. The Ts celebrated early success, as 100 Thieves were only able to land a single round to their four, stopping just two short of closing out their opponents' map pick. The defense had finally woken up and showed their teeth, but not before fnatic ensured sextuple map point.
Justin "jks" Savage was determined to prolong the engagement, as highlight quad and triple kills improved the odds in the Aussies' favor, and overtime was eventually forced off the back of six consecutive round victories. A less convincing CT side for 100 Thieves in overtime was costly, however, as fnatic made theirs count, closing Inferno 19-16 with a sneaky B site play from flusha to top things off.
Mirage was up next, and in line with previous developments, early upsets took place where fnatic's T side was on the receiving end. A successful pistol round for the Swedes was met with a momentum sway that meant an early lead for Aaron "AZR" Ward and company. The advantage was short-lived for the Aussies, as retaliation came later in the form of a Deagle triple kill from KRIMZ to tie the score at five apiece. A crafty B execute from the Swedes was the final conversion of the initial half, as 100 Thieves stepped onto the T side with a 9-6 surplus.
Joakim "jkaem" Myrbostad accommodated for his team's development on the T side, as a Glock triple kill put 100 Thieves ahead. The teams exchanged blows to create a 12-7 scoreline favored towards the Australians, but fnatic sought to mount a CT-sided comeback of their own, as Brollan and KRIMZ stepped up to square things off down the line. A successful B hit in round 25 for 100 Thieves was pivotal in keeping the team afloat, and jks capitalized on the moment, showing up when his team needed him most. Three multi-frag rounds, the latter-most featuring a triple kill, ensured map point for the Australian side.
Jesper "JW" Wecksell was not prepared to concede Mirage, as the AWPer posted quad, double and triple kills in the concluding three rounds of regulation, forcing overtime. A productive CT performance, followed by convincing aggression and a 1v2 clutch from KRIMZ in the second half of OT yielded fnatic a 19-16 map and series victory.
